Resource Summary: Voting in a Pandemic

The 2020 General Election was like no other in recent history, the health crisis presented by COVID-19, resulted in changes to voting for Californians. Through Governor Newsom’s Executive Orders and legislative action, every voter was sent a ballot by mail but counties retained options for voting in-person, mailing their ballot or dropping off their ballot at official voting locations or drop boxes. In addition, many counties offered early voting opportunities.

FoCE led a cross sector workgroup that brought together election officials and nonprofit partners from across the state to coordinate messaging and resources for voting in a pandemic. This category contains messaging tools for voter outreach during the COVID-19 public health crisis, digital assets for voter education materials, an educational video to explain the voting options, the published report Voter Messaging in the Time of COVID-19 done in partnership with Center for Inclusive Democracy at USC, and more. These resources may serve to inform future voter education efforts as the pandemic, or other health crisis develops.
